Revolutionary Table Lamp Design: DIDI

Handmade Innovation by Ronen Bavly Wins Platinum A' Design Award

When designing a pleated skirt, the cone shape became a source of fascination for the design team led by Ronen Bavly. This sparked a playful exploration of cutting, folding, and reopening ellipse shapes, eventually leading to the creation of DIDI, a unique table lamp. The "folding" lines in the design became light slits, adding a distinctive aesthetic to the lamp.

DIDI stands out for its handmade quality, produced in small series at Bavly's atelier. The lamp employs a LED energy-saving bulb, offering brightness and high performance. Despite its almost miniature figure, the intensity of the light is strong and stable, equivalent to a 100-watt bulb. The lampshade, made purely out of metal, serves as the direct heat reducer of the light bulb, making it possible to touch all over.

The realization of DIDI involved the use of laser-cut technology for its aluminium cone head and iron base. The rest of the details were crafted through precise metalworking. The lamp's design also features interior colors of yellow, light blue, and light green, offering a vibrant touch to its aesthetic.

The design process for DIDI began in August 2010, with the first series produced in September 2011. The entire creative process and realization took place in "Magenta", Jerusalem, Israel. A significant challenge during the design process was retaining the lamp's miniature figure and aesthetic value while needing a very small light source. The team overcame this by taking the LED bulb out of its original socket and making the shade itself the cooling fixture.

DIDI's innovative design and aesthetic appeal earned it the Platinum A' Lighting Products and Fixtures Design Award in 2012. This prestigious award recognizes world-class, exceptional, and highly innovative designs that showcase unmatched professionalism, contribute to societal wellbeing, and advance the boundaries of art, science, design, and technology.
